2 Week Holiday Period

Over the 2 weeks holiday I set myself a few goals which are the following.

  • Complete research for alien art/artists. Find Art for pirates.
  • Gather research of time period.
  • Gather research for pirates from film and TV series.
  • Finish sketch work of aliens and pirates.

Today I have been researching character and environment art on concept art world, Zbrush Central and Google images. I have been trying to find alien and pirate art for reference and environment art which can The following are artists I have found on concept art world:

Alien Artists

The first artist I found was Andrew Baker, specialising in creature and character designer his work intrigued me right away and gave me many new ideas for my alien concept design. I will be referencing back to Andrews work whilst I develop my alien designs.

The second artist I discovered on concept art world was Landis Fields, specialising in Visual Development and 3D Concept Artist in the feature animation, television, film, and video game industry. Landis has a few alien designs on concept art world which I find very interesting and I am going to use his work as reference.

Another artist I found was Einar Martinsen, he currently is a senior concept artist & matte painter. Einar is currently working in film ant TV. He has some really cool looking work and I will be referencing his work.

Josh Crockett is another artist I have discovered through Google, specialising in digital sculpture, concept art,  illustration, and creature/character design for the film, gaming, television and publishing industries. Hes work on his creatures and studies really intrigue me and I will be using a large amount of Josh's work as reference material.

Whilst searching on Google I found Alex Stratulat, 3D Character Artist, Modeller, Texture Artist, 3D Generalist. He has created a really cool human character based off Warhammer Online, I will be using this design for reference.

After I found the above artist, i gathered a large amount of reference of there own work and others i could find on the Internet. I also gathered a large amount of reference material for pirates as well.

Research From Film and TV For Pirates

To gather my research for pirates from film and TV I watched the following, Black Sails (TV),
Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl (Film). From watching the above i found that Pirates aren't clean people, they are very unhygienic. During the course of watching Black Sails there is a lot of sex, I did research on this to see what pirates did during there time on land, it turns out they have a large amount of sex, drinking and fighting. I also discovered that drinking was a huge part of being a pirate, anyone who wouldn’t drink was looked at suspiciously. I find this strange as being intoxicated on alcohol must make steering a ship, firing cannons, boarding ships etc. much harder, but then again pirates don't appear to be the brightest of people.

Whist watching Pirates of The Caribbean, there was a lot of talk about magic, I used this to gather research into what magic was used for in the 18th century, I wanted  to see how I could implement a Warlock character for my game. Magic was the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation, ceremony, ritual, the casting of spells or various other techniques that presumably assured human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature. Over the course of time, magic has been practiced in many cultures, and utilised ways of understanding, experiencing and influencing the world somewhat akin to those offered by religion, though it was sometimes regarded as more focused on achieving results than religious worship. Magic was often viewed with suspicion by the wider community, and was commonly practiced in isolation and secrecy

I have also been exploring concept art from different mmorpg games, I explored Tera, WOW, Guild Wars 2, Age Of Conan and Lord Of The Rings Online. I wanted to see how the above games created concept art for their environments and character concepts. I personally found that how Guild Wars 2 created their artwork was very unique and it was a style which is new to me, so it drawn my attention straight away unlike a few of the others. I also liked how Age Of Conan created character art, I think for my concept art I will be trying to merge these two styles together. Below is an example of Ago Of Conans character art and Guild Wars 2 character art.

The Following images are all my sketch work for my alien and pirate designs

The above are my first initial sketch's just to get basic ideas down on paper, the following are development sketch's of different classes/profession.

Ranger Development Work For Aliens

Warrior Development Work For Aliens

Warlock Development Work For Aliens

 Human Face Development

For my 3d design work I decided to create my alien warrior class/profession in 3d as i felt it was the most developed class/profession, i also felt that I could create a high standard model for this design. The following are side view and back views design for the warrior class.

Back Designs

Finally during the 2 week holiday period I watched Small Soldiers, during the film the commando elite toys face the Gorgonites. As I was still looking for a name for my alien race I decided to call them Gorgs as I felt like this sounded very unique and different to other fictional alien races.
